When selling your iPhone, one of the first questions a buyer will ask is whether it's unlocked. Here's what that means and why it matters.

Carrier Lock vs Unlocked

When you buy an iPhone on a payment plan through AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, or any carrier, it's often "locked" to that carrier. A locked iPhone will only activate and work on that specific carrier's network. If you put a different carrier's SIM in, it won't work.

An "unlocked" iPhone works on any carrier — you can pop in any SIM card from any country and it will work.
