iCloud Activation Lock is the single most common reason a phone sale falls through. A locked iPhone is nearly worthless on the resale market — most buyers won't touch it. Before you bring your iPhone to TechITAZ (or anyone), here's how to remove it correctly.
What is iCloud Activation Lock?
Activation Lock is Apple's anti-theft system. When "Find My iPhone" is enabled, the phone becomes tied to your Apple ID. Even after a factory reset, the phone will ask for your Apple ID and password before it can be activated. Without your credentials, the phone can't be used.
Step-by-Step: Remove iCloud Lock (Takes 2 Minutes)
Method 1: Sign Out on the Phone (Easiest)
- Open Settings on the iPhone
- Tap your name at the top
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out
- Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
- Choose whether to keep a copy of data on the device
- Tap Sign Out to confirm
This removes Activation Lock and unlinks the device from your Apple ID. You can then erase the phone normally.
Method 2: Remove via iCloud.com (If You Don't Have the Phone)
- Go to iCloud.com on any browser
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Click Find My
- Select the device you want to remove
- Click Erase This Device, then Remove from Account
⚠️ You can only remove a device from iCloud.com after it's been erased. If the phone is still active and you want to erase it remotely, select "Erase" first, then remove from account.
What If You Forgot Your Apple ID Password?
Go to iforgot.apple.com to reset your Apple ID password. You'll need access to your trusted phone number or email. Once you reset it, use Method 1 or 2 above.
What If the Phone Isn't Yours?
If you received a phone as a gift, inherited it, or bought it secondhand and it's locked to someone else's Apple ID — you cannot remove Activation Lock without their credentials. There is no legitimate bypass. Contact the original owner to remove it, or the phone won't sell for anything meaningful.
How to Verify Activation Lock Is Off
After signing out, erase the phone (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content). During the setup screen, it should say "Hello" and proceed to language selection — not ask for an Apple ID. If it asks for an Apple ID, Activation Lock is still on.
