How to Check if Your iPhone Is Unlocked (Before Selling)

Updated 2026 · TechITAZ, Avondale AZ

Whether your iPhone is carrier locked or unlocked makes a big difference in what you'll get paid. An unlocked iPhone is worth $30–$80 more than a locked one. Here's how to check — takes less than 2 minutes.

Method 1: Check in Settings (Fastest)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap About
  4. Scroll down to Carrier Lock

If it says "No SIM restrictions" — your iPhone is unlocked. ✅
If it says a carrier name (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) — it's locked to that carrier.

⚠️ This setting only appears on iOS 14 and later. If you don't see it, use Method 2.

Method 2: Try a Different SIM Card

The most reliable test: borrow a SIM from a friend who uses a different carrier and put it in your phone. If it works and makes calls — the phone is unlocked. If you see "SIM Not Supported" or "Invalid SIM" — it's locked.

Method 3: Check Your Account with Your Carrier

Log in to your carrier's website or call customer service. Most carriers will tell you your device's unlock status. You can also request an unlock through them if you've paid off the device.

How to Get Your iPhone Unlocked

If your iPhone is locked, you can often get it unlocked for free:

How Much Does Unlock Status Affect Value?

iPhone 15 Pro MaxUp to $520Up to $460+$60

Unlocking your iPhone before selling takes 2–5 business days with most carriers and costs nothing (if you've paid off the device). That wait can net you an extra $40–$80.
