There's a difference between an iPhone that gets warm during normal use and one that's genuinely overheating. In Arizona — where summer temps regularly hit 110°F+ — phones face conditions Apple's engineers in California probably didn't fully account for. Here's how to tell what's going on with yours.
Normal: Your iPhone gets warm while charging, during a long FaceTime call, or after 30 minutes of gaming. This is expected. The A-series chips generate heat during intensive work, and that's fine.
Overheating: Your iPhone displays a temperature warning screen ("iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it"), shuts off unexpectedly, throttles performance dramatically, or stays hot even when idle. That's a problem.
1. Direct sunlight exposure — Leaving your phone on the car dash or center console in Arizona summer is the fastest way to cook it. Even with AC running, the surface your phone rests on can be 150°F+. Your car's interior can hit 160°F on a July day. This kills batteries and can damage the display permanently.
2. Background app activity — After a major iOS update, your iPhone re-indexes content (Spotlight, Photos, Mail). This can cause sustained CPU use and heat for 24–48 hours post-update. It usually resolves on its own.
3. Degraded battery — A battery with health below 75% works harder to deliver the same power, generating more heat in the process. An old battery overheating is often the first sign that replacement is due.
4. A runaway background process — Sometimes a specific app gets stuck and hammers the CPU. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Usage to see if one app is consuming a disproportionate amount of power.
5. Fast charging continuously in a hot environment — Charging generates heat. Charging in a 90°F room without ventilation compounds it. If you charge with a thick case on in the Arizona heat, that case is trapping the thermal output of both the battery and charger.
6. Hardware damage — Water damage, a swollen battery, or impact damage to the charging port can all cause the phone to run hot even when doing nothing. This is when you need a technician.

Probably not permanently. Let it cool completely (20–30 minutes in a cool, shaded area) and try again. If it still won't charge after cooling, bring it in — the charging circuit may have been stressed.
